The Lecture on the Theme of Hydrogen Fuel Cells made by Prof. Rui Chen of Loughborough University

On March 22, 2016, Prof. Rui Chen who comes from Loughborough University was invited by Department of Vehicle Energy System and Control Technology, IEE CAS to make a lecture named “Hydrogen Fuel Cells - A Zero-Emission Propulsion for Future Vehicles”. Prof. Wang Lifang presided over the lecture.

Prof. Rui Chen is the Head of Thermofluids and Dynamics Research Theme at Loughborough University, UK. He is a fellow of IMechE, a member of science board of the UK Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Hub, and the Energy Storage Hub. His research covers both modelling and experimental aspects of energy technologies in internal combustion engines, fuel catalytic processing, fuel cell technologies and combustion kinetics.

                                                                                                                                  

In the lecture, Prof. Rui Chen firstly point out that EU and G8 declared that CO2 emissions must be cut by at least 80% (from 1990 levels) by 2050 to stabilize atmospheric CO2 at 450 ppm and keep global warming below 2°C. It brings big pressure to the automotive industry. Even though academic and engineering scholars have been making various efforts in the field of internal combustion engine technology, it is still difficult to achieve the carbon emission standard, which expounded the driving force of the hydrogen fuel cell research. Then, Prof. Rui Chen gave detailed introduction about the key technologies of the hydrogen fuel cells, and the hydrogen preparation, storage, injectors’ technical route and the research status. He named the water recycling technology, thermal management technology and material system structure design are the key technical problems of hydrogen fuel cells. Prof. Rui Chen also put forward the research difficulties of hydrogen fuel cells, such as the internal water recycling technology, the huge heat dissipation technology, and the technology of improving the utilization rate of catalyst, etc. After the lecture, Prof. Rui Chen discussed the industrialization, application field and development trend of hydrogen fuel cells with teachers and students.
