29 -31 May, 2019, the 5th Smart Grid Deep-Dive Workshop was jointly held in Vancouver, Canada, by the Institute of Electrical Engineering (IEE) CAS, Natural Resources Canada, Canadian National Research Council, Italy Ricerca Sistema Energetico, and the Ministry of Science and Technology of India.
The meeting was an important side event of the 4th Mission Innovation Ministerial meeting (MI-4). More than 100 representatives of international organizations, scientific research institutions and enterprises from more than 20 countries attended the meeting.
During the meeting, "Smart Grids Innovation Challenge Country Report 2019: Strategies, Trends and Activities on Jointly Identified Research Topics (START)" is officially released. The book was prepared by the Institute of Electrical Engineering CAS, as well as other members in the IC1 group. It includes smart grid and renewable energy technology innovations in 16 countries and the European Union. It was mentioned by the heads of delegations of China, Italy and India at the ministerial level meeting and became a highlight of MI-4.

The workshop also officially launched the “Smart Grid Innovation Acceleration Platform”, and announced the next steps of six sub-tasks, including energy storage system, demand response, regional electric expressway, flexible resources, new power grid control architecture, and power electronics. In addition, a seminar on the theme of “Digital Economy for Future Power” was held, which achieved fruitful results.
The Smart Grid Innovation Challenge Working Group is the first innovation challenge working group under the MI mechanism. Prof. Yibo WANG from IEE CAS is one of the co-leads. The group includes 20 countries and Europe Commission. The mission of the working group is to promote smart grid technology innovation for high-ratio renewable energy and to promote the doubling of government and companies’ R&D investment.
