Yunnan Luxi ± 350kV/1000MW VSC-HVDC Back to Back Asynchronous Interconnected Grid Project has been put into operation
----with the highest voltage, largest capacity MMC converters in the world
On August 29, the back to back asynchronous interconnected project between Yunnan power grid and China Southern main power grid was completed and officially put into operation, with two ± 350kV/1000MW VSC-HVDC MMC converters, the highest voltage and largest capacity MMC converters in the world. The project is located in LuXi village, Luoping County, Qujing city, Yunnan province. This project operates in a combination mode of one BTB VSC-HVDC and one BTB CSC-HVDC for the first time in the world. The project will be able to improve the grid security of Yunnan grid and China Southern main grid effectively, and improve the delivery capacity of hydropower of Yunnan grid.

In this project, the Institute of Electrical Engineering, CAS and China XD Group are responsible for the research and development of Guangxi side ± 350kV/1000MW converter valves and control and protection systems. This converter uses the modular multilevel converter (MMC) topology with more than 2,800 power modules (over 5600 power electronic switching devices) and other passive components, which is the highest voltage, largest capacity power converter with the most complicated topology in the world for the time being.
