Prof.Li Quan Visited IEECAS
  Date:2015-09-06

Prof. Quan Li, from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland visited our Institute and gave the lecture about the applications of the superconductor in energy system to the researchers and students, on Aug. 18th, 2015. Prof. Guomin Zhang, from the Superconducting Power Applications & Novel Power Transmission Department, IEECAS presided over the lecture.

In the lecture entitled with “ Superconducting Technology—An Unstoppable Technology Revolution”, Prof. Quan Li briefly introduced the applications of superconductor so far, including superconducting cables, generators, fault current limiters, particle accelerator and so on. He pointed that the main goal was to save the energy. Then he introduced main research themes in his team, including the submarine superconducting cables using to connect marine power produced by wind-energy, 15KW marine wind-energy generator supported by GE, the development of small particle accelerator. He also put forward some novel research aspects, like the superconducting fuse, superconducting cables used in vessels to change the direction of ocean current with its magnetic field, and so on. He informed that he was now the director of Superconductor and Energy Technology Research Center, which was built lately in School of Engineering, University of Edinburgh. He expected to cooperate with our Institute in the future. After the lectures, Prof. Quan Li kindly answered some questions from the audience.

Prof. Quan Li, born 1980, received his bachelor and master degree, Electrical Engineering, in Tsinghua University. Then he went to the Cambridge University and accomplished his PhD. Now he is working in the University of Edinburgh as the assistant professor. His research interests are centered on applied superconductivity and renewable energy.
