Superconducting Experts Prof. H. Kumakura Visited IEE
  Date:2014-04-11

On April 8th, 2014, Prof. H. Kumakura, visiting professor of IEE, from National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), Japan, was invited by Institute of Electrical Engineering, CAS and deliver a lecture on “Recent development of MgB2 and Ba-122 wires and tapes in NIMS”. Prof. Yanwei Ma, the vice-director of laboratory of superconductors and new materials and group leader of superconducting materials group, hosted a welcome ceremony for Prof. Kumakura.

Prof. H. Kumakura, the famous international superconducting expert, was director of superconducting materials center, NIMS. His interests are centered on development of the high performance Bi-based high-Tc oxide, MgB2 and Nb3Al superconducting tapes and wires. With his colleagues, he has published above 500 reviewed papers and applied 15 Japanese patents and 5 International patents.

In this lecture, Prof. Kumakura introduced two main superconductors including MgB2 and Ba-122 wires. For MgB2 wire and tapes, he summarized that small wire diameter (decrease of B layer) is effective in decreasing non reacted B in IMD wire and increasing Jc values, and hybrid method(PIT+IMD) is effective in increasing Je values. For (Ba(Sr),K)Fe2As2 tapes, he concluded that the grain coupling in 122 tape is not so weak as Bi-2212 and Bi-2223 tapes in spite of lower degree of c-axis grain orientation and the change of micro-crack structure and high Jc may be obtained by applying a flat rolling and by decreasing the tape thickness.

After the lecture, Prof. Kumakura had a discussion with some researchers and students in the fields.
