Japanese Superconducting Experts Dr. S. Awaji and Dr. G. Nishijima Visited IEE
  Date:2009-08-05

Dr. S. Awaji and Dr. G. Nishijima, from the High Field Laboratory for Superconducting Materials (HFLSM) at Sendai, visited IEE on Oct. 22th, 2008, and delivered lectures on “Design of a 30T Superconducting Magnet” and “Mechanical Property Evaluation for Practical Superconductors”, respectively. Prof. Yanwei Ma, the vice-director of Applied Superconductivity Laboratory, chaired this lecture and more than 20 researchers from IEE attended this lecture.
Dr. S. Awaji introduced the design summary of 30T Superconducting Magnet in detail. He analyzed the field contribution of high temperature superconductors (HTS) and low temperature superconductors (LTS). In order to develop the high field superconducting magnets, stress/strain properties of the superconducting materials are very important issue. Dr. G. Nishijima introduced the methods to evaluate the mechanical properties of superconductors. Then he showed their recent results of mechanical property improvement for the high-strength Nb3Sn wires and the high temperature oxide superconductors.

The High Field Laboratory for Superconducting Materials (HFLSM) at Sendai focuses on the superconducting materials and magnet technologies. In particular, the development of the cryogen-free superconducting magnet at the HFLSM is one of unique technologies in the world up to now.
