Dr. Jack Ekin Gives Seminar at IEE
  Date:2010-11-15

The Sino-Japan-South Korea educative seminar on superconductivity and low-temperature experiment by Dr. Jack Ekin was held in Institute of Electrical Engineering (IEE), Chinese Academy of Sciences from October 26 to 29, 2010.

Dr. Jack Ekin is a research physicist at the US. National Institute of Standards and Technology in Boulder and a lecturer at the University of Colorado. He is the author of the famous textbook Experimental Techniques for Low-temperature Measurements (Oxford Univ. Press, 2006, 2007).

The seminar was mainly divided into two parts. In the first part, Dr. Jack Ekin gave an introductory lecture on superconductivity, with emphasis on practical power superconductors for energy, accelerator, and medical applications. He described the fabrication of practical superconductors and its recent applications to the power grid, the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, high energy physics accelerators, and the very recent development of superconducting proton cancer treatment facilities.

The second part is more technical as Dr. Jack Ekin presented a step-by-step approach to the design and construction of low temperature measurement apparatus. He outlined the techniques for cryostat design, heat-transfer calculations, construction techniques, selection of materials, wiring, thermometry, sample mounting techniques, and superconductor contact technology.

The seminar was co-organized by IEE and Versailles Project on Advanced Materials and Standards, it had also received support from Japan Science and Technology Agency Strategic International Cooperative Program.
